I am really excited with my second painting in my cargo ship series! Cheri and I initially came upon this Cargo ship in the harbour at Squamish as it was off-loading its cargo. When the conditions are right, the water in the harbour takes on an unbelievable turquoise colour. This painting was a true challenge in finding balance between subduing the background to create depth while still maintaining a level of detail and believability that I enjoy creating in my work. Not being a ‘landscape’ artist by definition, I have taken on a strong interest in creating larger areas of landscape in my paintings and I have really enjoyed the learning curve. I love how setting these subjects into a broader environment allows the viewer to create a larger story when viewing the overall scene, and widens the connection between subject and actual location. I try to maintain tight accuracy with the landscape to allow immediate recognition by those that are familiar with the location. With a setting as beautiful as Squamish, it would be hard to conceive of ways to artificially create it even more so.
